Cleaning your hot tub filters regularly is so incredibly important for the health of your hot tub & for your health as well. We cannot stress this enough! Clogged filters causes unnecessary strain on your pumps and heater and can actually cause them to fail. When your filters are clogged, your hot tub water is also not being cleaned & sanitized properly. So, like we said, cleaning hot tub filters regularly is SO important. It’s really not all that hard either. Below are some tips on cleaning hot tub filters.
Tips On Cleaning Hot Tub Filters
- Clean Filters Weekly: Cleaning your filters weekly creates a habit to make sure they’re clean! Also, it gives debris less time to bind to the pleats on your filters.
- Clean thoroughly: Make sure you are cleaning your hot tub filters thoroughly. You want to hose off between each pleat, this is where the debris sits.
- Use Filter Cleaning Spray: If you want to make cleaning your tub filters quick & easy, a cleaning spray helps loosen up any debris. Spray it on, let it sit, and hose it off. If you don’t do this regularly, you should at least incorperate it monthly to give them a deep clean
- DO NOT POWER WASH: This is a big NO. Power washers are way too powerful for your delicate filters. They can blow holes through paper & ceramic filters and completely ruin them. A little pressure from a spray nozzle is plenty.
- Hold On To Replacements: The worst part about cleaning filters in the winter is having to be outside in the cold. Have a replacement set to swap in and out in the winter. This is nice to have so you can take your filters out in the winter and put fresh clean ones in while you wash your filters in your shower. You can let the freshly cleaned ones dry out in your garage or shed for the next swap.
- Got Ceramic Filters?: Ceramic filters last longer, clean more efficiently, and are much easier to clean. Ceramic filters are only available for certain hot tub models. So, check with your local dealer to see if you can swap your filters for ceramic ones.
How to know when it’s time to replace your hot tub filters.
- Your hot tub water just isn’t crystal clear anymore & it’s been a while since you replaced your hot tub filters.
- The pleats in your filters are starting to separate or stick together.
- They’re very discolored. Some discoloration is normal. However, if your filters are a deep brown or green it’s time for them to go.
- Your breakers keep tripping with the filters are in. When you take them out, they no longer trip. This means your filters are too clogged & may need to be replaced.
- Paper filters should be replaced every 1.5 years. Ceramic filters can last anywhere from 3-5 years.
